Thirteen ways to flip a word

There are 13 different ways to transform text or make an ambigram. They all use the exact same core code to calculate the flips and rotations. Instead of getting overwhelmed by options, pick the specific tool designed for your goal—whether you're designing a tattoo, combining two names for a custom gift, creating a logo, or just making upside-down text for a funny social media post.

How it works

Four steps, same across every generator on this site.

01

Enter text

A name, word, or two names to merge.

02

Pick orientation

Mirror, rotational, or circular symmetry.

03

Choose a style

Gothic for ink, modern for logos, script for names.

04

Download

High-resolution PNG, free, no watermark.

Built on one engine, not thirteen gimmicks

Every page above is a different lens on the same letter-symmetry logic — so a design you like in one generator carries over to the rest.

Letter compatibility

We map which letters rotate or mirror into others before we touch a font — the same table powers both the mirror and rotational generators.

Stroke balance

Consistent weight keeps both readings legible, not just one — especially important for a tattoo ambigram that has to hold up on skin.

Free, always

Unlimited generations and full-resolution downloads, no paywall — try the two name ambigram for a free custom gift.

What is an ambigram?

An ambigram is a piece of typography designed to hold its meaning — or reveal a new one — when viewed from another angle: rotated 180°, reflected in a mirror, or read from a different perspective. The term itself was coined by cognitive scientist Douglas R. Hofstadter in 1983, and the craft has since grown from a typographic curiosity into a fixture of tattoo art, branding, and personalized gifts. Every generator on this page automates the same underlying discipline: mapping which letterforms can convincingly double as another when flipped, without breaking readability in either direction.

Beyond rotation and mirroring

Ambigram artists work in more than two symmetry types. Knowing the taxonomy helps you describe what you actually want, even if this site's tools focus on the four most requested styles.

The artists who shaped the craft

Long before AI could generate a design in seconds, a handful of typographers and illustrators worked out these principles by hand.

Frequently asked questions

Is this ambigram generator free?

Yes — every tool on this site generates unlimited designs and full-resolution downloads with no paywall.

What's the best word length for an ambigram?

Short words of 4–8 letters generally produce the cleanest, most balanced results. Longer phrases can still work, but usually need more artistic compromise.

Can an ambigram show two different words?

Yes — these are sometimes called dual-word ambigrams. Our Two Name Ambigram and AI Ambigram Generator are both built for exactly this.

Which file format should I download?

PNG works well for social media and web use. If you plan to resize the design for printing or engraving, look for a tool that also offers a vector format like SVG.

Do I need design experience to use this?

No. Type your text, pick a style, and generate — no typography background required.

Can ambigrams be made in languages other than English?

Yes, though English is the most common starting point. Feasibility depends on the letterforms and structure of the target script.
